Organised by
Department of Microbiology
Andhra University, Visakhapatnam-03
Andhra Pradesh
SCOPE OF THE SEMINAR
The proposed two day national seminar with a platform or Bioactive molecules and emerging trends in Biotechnolgy, as there is a great deal of interest, hype associated with Biotechnology and its applications in various arenas of research over the years. Bioactive molecules are substances that have an effect on the cellular function of an organism or living tissue. They may be derived from natural (biologicat) resources or synthetic chemicals. Bioactive molecules from biological resources are a potential source of pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. In another line of development, with the advent of biotechnology, the production of recombinant bioactive molecuLes has attracted a lot of interest. Such recombinant
molecules have great potential for commercialization as they are usefuL in diagnostic tools. The pool of researchers with diverse expertise and the active collaboration have enhanced the progress of bioactive molecular research.
The present research focuses on the mechanisms of action of the bioactive molecules using new approaches such as 'genomic' technologies and insilco modelling. Research in this area has received immense interest among researchers
and has shown encouraging progress.

8th Annual BioMalPar Conference 2012 - Germany

  • This will be the 8th BioMalPar conference all of which have taken place at EMBL Heidelberg. However this meeting is sponsored by the European Network of Excellence, EVIMalaR. EVIMalaR is a new malaria research network that whilst distinct from BioMalPar seeks to continue some of the best BioMalPar initiatives, this meeting being one. EVIMalaR consists of 54 partner laboratories in 37 institutions from 10 European and from 5 principally African malaria endemic countries (Sudan, Uganda, Nigeria, and Cameroon, and South Africa) and one Indian institute. The Australian Malaria Research Network also enjoys full membership. EVIMalaR also comprises 25 European and 1 African affiliated partners.

Created in October 2009, EVIMalaR was established and will perpetuate the original BioMalPar (which formally ended in September 2009) vision of forming a European-wide virtual institute, enhancing cohesion between its component research groups.

EVIMalaR also places a particular emphasis on its training role, and continues to support a high profile PhD scholarship, fellowships and travel awards. EVIMalaR aims also to ensure a broad dissemination of research results and enhance the public awareness through the implementation of a website www.evimalar.org and the organisation of annual conferences, training courses and meetings.
  • Aims of eventThe scientific aims of the network remain to address, in an integrated, collaborative manner, fundamental questions of the biology of the malaria parasite, its vector, and the disease, allowing optimal exploitation of the resulting knowledge to impact on public health.

The purpose of the BioMalPar annual conference is to bring together malaria researchers from Europe and overseas (including Africa, America, Asia and Australia) in order to present and share recent groundbreaking findings on fundamental malaria research. New insights will also be featured through the use of poster sessions. This meeting will also provide an enriched environment for researchers at all stages of their career to interact with international leaders in the field. The meeting will offer an excellent opportunity for sharing ideas and for potential development of new worldwide collaborations.

India 2012, National Seminar on Biotechnological Approaches in Pest Management - Punjab

National Seminar on Biotechnological Approaches in Pest Management
May 4-5, 2012
Organized by
Department of Entomology
Punjab Agricultural University

Background : With the advent of genetic-engineering technology in agriculture, the science of pest management has evolved into a new realm. Advances in molecular and cellular biology now allow scientists to introduce desirable traits from other species into crop plants. The most commonly introduced genetically engineered (GE) trait for insect resistance is the delta- endotoxin gene from a soilinhabiting, spor e- f or ming bacter ium  Bacillus thuringiensis. Since their introduction in 1996, the use of Bt-transgenics has grown rapidly and accounted for more than 58 million hectares of cotton and corn in 2010. An alternative approach, involving downregulation of the expression of specific genes through RNA interference (RNAi), has been widely used for genetic research in insects and has the potential to yield a new generation of insect resistant transgenic crops through dsRNA directed against suitable insect target genes.Besides the spectacular success of transgenic crops, several other biotechnological approaches including marker-assisted selection (MAS), RNA interference in crop plants, plant and insect genomics, and paratransgenesis have the potential to revolutionize future pest management programmes. Plant genomics and MAS can substantially improve the efficiency of plant breeding for insect resistance. The i5K initiative to sequence the genomes of 5000 insects and other arthropods, over the next five years, will result in better understanding of insect biology and transform our ability to manage arthropods that threaten our health, food supply and economic security. It is therefore timely to take stock of the diverse range of biotechnological approaches available for use in future pest management programmes and to be prepared for the emerging challenges.
Programme : The programme will consist of key note, invited and contributed papers. Renowned agricultural biotechnologists and applied entomologists will deliver key note and invited oral presentations. Contributed papers will be accepted as poster presentations after screening.
Invitation : Molecular biologists, agricultural biotechnologists, entomologists and other crop protection scientists  working on biotechnological approaches in IPM, are invited to contribute papers and participate in the seminar.Venue : Wheat Auditorium, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana
