ISARCON - 2012 India: 25th Annual Conference of The Indian Society for Atherosclerosis Research

International Conference on
Recent Trends in Atherosclerosis
and
25th Annual Conference of The Indian Society for Atherosclerosis Research (ISARCON-2012)
01st – 03rd September, 2012
Organised by
DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY & BIOTECHNOLOGY
Annamalai University
Chidambaram
Tamil Nadu
Dear Colleagues,      The Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology, Annamalai University is organising ‘International Conference on Recent Trends in Atherosclerosis and 25th Annual Conference of the Indian Society for Atherosclerosis Research (ISARCON-2012) from September 01 – 03, 2012. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the biggest cause of death worldwide, and have increased at an astonishingly fast rate in low- and middle-income countries. The percentage of premature deaths due to cardiovascular diseases range from 4% in high-income countries to 42% in low-income countries. The World Health Organisation report ‘Global atlas on cardiovascular disease prevention and control’ states that CVDs are the leading cause of death and disability in the world. Although CVDs are preventable, they continue to rise mainly because preventive measures are inadequate. It is estimated that by the year 2030, almost 23.6 million people will be affected from CVDs, mainly from heart disease and stroke. Hence, there is an obligation to prevent this catastrophe in point of fact by tailoring effective treatment strategies.
This conference will provide a forum for discussing the epidemiology, biochemistry, experimental medicine, clinical and interventional cardiology. Further, this conference will provide a platform for discussing the medicinal properties of phytochemicals and their applications in interventional cardiology. Large number of delegates from India and abroad are expected to attend this meet. We request you to take this opportunity and participate in the conference and visit the temple city of Chidambaram. Your active participation is highly solicited. We will make our best efforts to make your stay in Chidambaram academically fruitful and enjoyable. Kindly, make a note of the dates for registration, abstract submission and accommodation and we request to circulate this information to your friends, colleagues and students who may be interested in attending the conference.
Focus areas of the conference
  • Role of phytochemicals in cardiovascular diseases
  • Recent trends in epidemiology, biochemistry and experimental medicine in cardiovascular diseases
  • Recent trends in clinical and interventional cardiology
  • Relationship between diabetes/hypertension/renal complications and cardiovascular diseases
  • Inflammation and atherosclerosis

About Lathyrus sativus
Lathyrus sativus (khesari dhal) is a well known food crop since time immemorial. It was cultivated and consumed all over the world before its harmful effects came to light. Neurolathyrism is a disease of motor neuron degeneration associated with excessive consumption of khesari dhal for 2-3 months. â-ODAP a structural analogue of glutamate but a conformational analogue of tyrosine has been implicated as the causative agent present in khesari dhal. Pathological hallmarks of this disease include degeneration of motor neurons in cortex region of brain resultin g in spastic paraparesis of hind limbs.Over the years there has been significant research in exploring the route of motor neuron degeneration. Excitotoxicity mediated by â-ODAP, mitochondrial electron transport chain inhibition (ETC), oxidative stress, lack of sulphur containing amino acids, inhibition of ã-glutamyl cysteine synthetase, and tyrosine amino transferase and an activator of protein kinase C have been implicated in the pathogenesis of Lathyrism. However, conclusive evidence still remains elusive.
Lathyrus sativus is a rich source of protein, carbohydrate, arginine and non protein amino acid homoarginine, which makes it versatile when compared to other available pulses. Arginine and homoarginine are substrates for nitric oxide production. Presence of arginine and homoarginine at high level in khesari dal helps in enhancing bioavailability of nitric oxide and promotes endothelial function by vasodilation. Apart from this both arginine and possibly homoarginine are known insulin secretagogues. Presently, there is a radical shift in the perception of the scientific community about Lathyrus, in unraveling its beneficial effects, as there is ample scope to turn it in to a highly useful food crop. The levels of â-ODAP can be reduced to very low levels using several detoxification methods as well as genetic modification so that, it can be used as highly beneficial food supplement and even its cost effectiveness can also be a great boon to millions of starving people all over the world. The proposed International Conference is aimed at converging all researchers' viz. agriculturists, farmers, biomedical scientists, toxicologists, clinicians, food and feed technologists etc. on one platform to discuss the issue and formulate strategies in developing technologies to make better use of the ever receding resources.
Topics: The conference enables participants to present a wide range of topics concerning medical, chemical, biochemical, analytical, toxicological, agricultural, detoxification, ODAP, homoarginine and other aspects of Lathyrus sativus.

NSPBB 2012 India: National Seminar on Present Prospectives of BioActive Molecules and Biotechnology

National Seminar on Present Prospectives of BioActive Molecules and Biotechnology (NSPBB 2012)
30-31 May 2012
Organised by
Department of Microbiology
Andhra University, Visakhapatnam-03
Andhra Pradesh
SCOPE OF THE SEMINAR
The proposed two day national seminar with a platform or Bioactive molecules and emerging trends in Biotechnolgy, as there is a great deal of interest, hype associated with Biotechnology and its applications in various arenas of research over the years. Bioactive molecules are substances that have an effect on the cellular function of an organism or living tissue. They may be derived from natural (biologicat) resources or synthetic chemicals. Bioactive molecules from biological resources are a potential source of pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals. In another line of development, with the advent of biotechnology, the production of recombinant bioactive molecuLes has attracted a lot of interest. Such recombinant
molecules have great potential for commercialization as they are usefuL in diagnostic tools. The pool of researchers with diverse expertise and the active collaboration have enhanced the progress of bioactive molecular research.
The present research focuses on the mechanisms of action of the bioactive molecules using new approaches such as 'genomic' technologies and insilco modelling. Research in this area has received immense interest among researchers
and has shown encouraging progress.
