India 2012 - National Seminar on Bioinformatics in High-Throughput Era, Ahmedabad

BIOINFO CONCLAVE 2012
National Seminar on “Bioinformatics in High-Throughput Era
31st march, 2012
Organized By
BitVirtual Bioinformatics Node (GCRI),
Dept. of Cancer Biology,
The Gujarat Cancer & Research Institute
New Civil Hospital Campus, Asarwa,
Ahmedabad-380016
sponsored by
Gujarat State Biotechnology Mission, Gandhinagar
Until recently, genome sequencing was performed in large sequencing centers with high automation and many personnel. The increasing demand for more cost-effective high-throughput DNA sequencing in this postgenome era has triggered the advent of the “next generation sequencing” methods. Due to their novel concepts and extraordinary high-throughput sequencing capacity, these methods allow researchers to grasp system-wide landscapes of the complex molecular events taking place in various biological systems, from Prokaryotes to Eukaryotes. Over the past decade, DNA-based microarrays have been the assays of choice for high throughput studies of gene expression. These methods are now being recognized as an essential tool for more comprehensive and deeper understanding of the mechanisms underlying many biological processes. To experimentalists and bioinformatician alike, modeling remains a valuable, albeit challenging, tool for probing numerous conformational, dynamic, and thermodynamic questions.
With realistic expectation that these methods will continue to improve at a rapid pace, biological scientists are excited about the growing possibilities for new research approaches that can be offered by these technologies.

Scientific Conferences on Genomic Disorders 2012: The Genomics of Rare Diseases

Building on the success of the annual Genomic Disorders meetings held at Hinxton since 2007, Genomic Disorders 2012 presents an exciting blend of genomic science and clinical medicine. Our meeting aims to bring together scientists and clinicians interested in genomic variation in humans and the mechanisms by which it exerts its phenotypic effects.

This year’s meeting will discuss the latest findings relating to the genomic basis of rare disorders, and the role of rare variants in common disease, as these can provide such powerful insights into human biology. Genome wide analyses, including most recently Whole Exome Sequencing, are proving to be of great value in discovering the genetic basis of rare disorders and illustrate the power of humans as a model organism to study. As sequencing technology advances apace, other key aspects of genome science need to develop and grow in parallel.

These include: analysis (interpretation of sequence and copy number variants including assessment of clinical and biological impact and the elucidation/discernment of what constitutes medically actionable variants), ethics (what to do with incidental findings generated by whole genome research studies) and policy (stewardship and access to genomic data in research and healthcare); GD2012 will feature scientific sessions in these key areas.

The meeting will take place at the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre, in the convivial setting of the Hinxton Genome Campus where some of the world's leading scientists can discuss advances in their field and learn about recent progress in others.

Additional speakers will be selected to speak from submitted abstracts

The conference will open with registration at 15:00 followed by talks from 17:00 on the Wednesday, 21 March.
The conference will close after dinner on the Friday, 23 March, with just departures on the morning of the Saturday, 24 March.

CENTRE FOR TRANSGENIC PLANT DEVELOPMENT :
The Centre is a unit of Department of Biotechnology. It is equipped with the state of art facilities to train the Ph.D and post doctoral students to carry out research in various disciplines of plant and microbial Biotechnology. The major R & D activities include cloning and characterization of novel genes linked with tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses and quality traits of medicinal and crop plants; authentication and standardization of crude components of herbal formulations; nano vehicle assisted gene delivery and expression in medicinal and crop plants.
The thrust areas of centre also include improving the quality of medicinal crops through genetic engineering of metabolic pathways; in vivo and in vitro conservation of medicinal plants; proteomics of host-pathogen interactions; development of easy, rapid, sensitive, cost effective method for aflatoxigenic mould detection in the groundnut kernels and soil; and identification and quantification of aflatoxins in the food and feed.
AREA OF FOCUS :
Plants synthesize a wide array of secondary metabolites, often with highly complex structures, which are used as drugs, flavouring agents, fragrances, natural colours, sweeteners etc. Plantderived drugs in western countries also represent a huge market value. Currently one-fourth of all prescribed pharmaceuticals in industrialized countries contain compounds that are directly or indirectly via semi-synthesis, derived from plants. The most pharmaceutically important secondary metabolites are isolated from wild or cultivated plants as their chemical synthesis is not economically feasible. The concentration of these metabolites in plants is however, very low, making their commercial production non-economic. Therefore, efforts are being made globally to enhance the concentration of these metabolites in plants through metabolic engineering. The overall objectives of the seminar is to exchange ideas and knowledge on recent advances in the field of secondary plant metabolite research. This will help researchers in designing strategies to improve the biosynthesis and production of secondary metabolites.
THEME AREA :
1. Phytochemistry and Biochemistry of plant secondary metabolites.
2. Impact of environmental stress on secondary plant metabolites.
3. Metabolic engineering of secondary plant metabolites.
4. In vitro culture and micropropogation of medicinal plants for increasing the production of secondary metabolites.
5. Molecular and Proteomic approach in secondary plant metabolite research.
6. Molecular markers for conservation of medicinal plants.

Netherlands 2012: NeuroPsychoEconomics Conference, Rotterdam

We are happy to announce that submissions are now open for the 2012 NeuroPsychoEconomics Conference in
Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The conference will be held from June 14-15, 2012 at the Rotterdam School of
Management, Erasmus University (Woudestein Campus, Burgemeester Oudlaan 50, 3062 PA Rotterdam, The
Netherlands). Conference co-chairs are Ale Smidts, Professor of Marketing Research at the Rotterdam School of
Management and Alan Sanfey, Principal Investigator in Decision Neuroscience at the Donders Institute for
Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, Radboud University Nijmegen. The deadline for submissions is March 1,
2012.
The conference theme of 2012 is:
“Integrating Neuroscience with Research
in Economics, Management, and Marketing”
Manuscripts should combine concepts from neuroscience and/or psychology with problems of economics and
management/marketing. Topics may include (but are not restricted to):
• Application of concepts and methods from neuroscience and/or psychology in solving economic and
management/marketing problems (e.g., consumer decision-making, behavioral finance, organizational science,
management, and decision science)
• Analysis of interpersonal behavior (e.g., relationships between customer-supplier, supervisor-subordinate,
and/or investor-firm) with the means of neuroscience and/or psychology
• Discussion of ethical and legal issues at the interface of psychology, neuroscience, and business and
economics research
• Evaluation of the state of the field of research in neuroeconomics/decision neuroscience/consumer
neuroscience
• Presentation of state-of-the-art techniques for investigating neuroeconomic problems (e.g., fMRI, DTI,
EEG/ERP, SCR)
Both empirical and conceptual manuscripts are welcome. The conference language will be English.
Pre-Conference
A pre-conference on ‘Advances in Neuroscientific Methods’ will be held on June 14, 2012 (attendance is free
for conference participants). This tutorial will offer lectures on fMRI, genetics, endocrinology, and TMS by
leading researchers from the Donders Institute.
