National seminar on faunal biodiversity and endemism of southern western ghats

NATIONAL SEMINAR ON
FAUNAL BIODIVERSITY AND ENDEMISM OF SOUTHERN WESTERN GHATS
The Western Ghats, known locally as the Sahyadri Hills, are formed by the Malabar Plains and the chain of mountains running parallel to India's western coast, about 30 to 50 kilometers inland. They cover an area of about 160,000 km² and stretch for 1,600 kilometers from the country's southern tip to Gujarat in the north, interrupted only by the 30 kilometers Palghat Gap. The Western Ghats mediates the rainfall regime of peninsular India by intercepting the southwestern monsoon winds. Dozens of rivers originate in these mountains, including the peninsula’s three major eastward-flowing rivers. The wide variation of rainfall patterns in the Western Ghats, coupled with the region’s complex geography, produces a great variety of vegetation types. These include scrub forests in the low-lying rain shadow areas and the plains, deciduous and tropical rainforests up to about 1,500 meters, and a unique mosaic of montane forests and rolling grasslands above 1,500 meters. Blessed with an abundance of life forms found nowhere else on earth, Western Ghats endemics include high-profile Lion-tailed Macaque and Nilgiri Tahr. Scientists of various organizations cataloguing endemics of this region estimate that there are 90 amphibians, 89 reptiles, 17 birds, 23 mammals, 1600 flowering plants and a lot more are found here only and nowhere else on earth

International Conference on Molecular Medicine MOLMED 2012

International Conference on Molecular Medicine MOLMED 2012
19-22 February 2012
Organized by
VIT University, Vellore
About the Conference :
The Centre for Bio-Separation Technology (CBST) at VIT University, in association with University at Buffalo (The State University of New York, Buffalo, USA), Swinburne University of Technology (Melbourne, Australia), Indian Institute of Technology – Madras (IITM, Chennai, India), Charotar University of Science & Technology (CHARUSAT, Changa, India), and Laila Pharmaceuticals Pvt. Ltd. (Chennai, India) is organizing this three day international conference on Molecular Medicine “MOLMED-2012” to expose Technology and Networking to the research community.
Molecular medicine is a broad field, where physical, chemical, biological and medical techniques are used to describe molecular structures and mechanisms, to identify fundamental molecular and genetic errors of disease, and to develop molecular interventions to correct them. The molecular medicine perspective emphasizes cellular and molecular phenomena and interventions rather than the previous conceptual and observational focus on patients and their organs. Therefore, it propagates a systematic understanding of the biological structures and functions at the molecular level through specified tools like proteomics, genomics, metabolomics and other basic researches which form the backbone to a sound Drug discovery and development program. Molecular medicine has thus led to the identification of several newer targets for drug delivery, making the drugs more effective. Nevertheless, with a better knowledge of the underlying mechanism of the diseases, several interventions could be effectively planned to combat them and to prevent further progression. This conference will thus look into various aspects of molecular medicine and cover topics related to genetic analysis of diseases, identification of novel targets and its mechanism.
The concept of nutraceuticals has evolved from the recognition of the link between food and health. These (often referred to as phytochemicals or functional foods) are natural bioactive, chemical compounds that have health promoting, disease preventing or medicinal properties. Rapid advances in science and technology, increasing health care costs, an aging population and rising interest in attaining wellness through diet are among the factors fuelling interest in nutraceuticals. The use of nutraceuticals, as an attempt to accomplish desirable therapeutic outcomes with reduced side effects, as compared with other therapeutic agents has met with great monetary success. Current research on the use of nutraceuticals as potential cancer chemo preventive agents has been limited largely to the study of their antiproliferative and apoptotic effects in human cancer cells. Therefore, it is very important that nutraceuticals be discussed and debated for analyzing its significance in disease prevention.Eminent experts in these multidisciplinary fields from within India and abroad will deliver plenary lectures. Short communications from young scientists, poster sessions, etc. will be organized to encourage young scientists and innovative initiatives in these emerging fields, and to promote exchanges and interactions between scientists from these diversified fields. In a congenial atmosphere, a good opportunity will be provided for Industries, Academia and Young Scientists to interact through exhibitions, demonstrations and discussions, featuring the latest equipment available for studies in these fields.

National Seminar on MICROBIAL DIVERSITY-POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS

National Seminar on MICROBIAL DIVERSITY-POTENTIAL APPLICATIONS
28 th & 29 th January, 2012
Sponsored by
ANDHRA PRADESH STATE COUNCIL OF HIGHER EDUCATION (APSCHE)
Organized by
DEPARTMENT OF MICROBIOLOGY
PALAMURU UNIVERSITY
MAHABUBNAGAR - 509 001 A P
THEME OF THE SEMINAR
Interest in the exploration of microbial diversity has been spurred by the fact that microbes are essential for life since they perform numerous functions essential for the biosphere that include nutrient cycling and environmental detoxification. The vast array of microbial activities and their importance to the biosphere and to human economies provide strong rationale for understanding their diversity, conservation and exploitation for society. The microbial world is the largest unexplored reservoir of biodiversity on the earth. Microbial diversity needs to be explored, as microbes are essential for life since they are having biotechnological applications with extreme commercial value.
The research on microorganisms once confined to phenotypic studies, is now aiming at to explore the genetic makeup with an objective to exploit the potentials of the organisms to the extent of built in capacity and even beyond that. Microbial diversity is a great source for biotechnological exploration of novel organisms, products and processes. Polyphasic studies integrate different aspects of microbial diversity and provide a more complete picture of microbial diversity and a deeper understanding of the interactions in microbial ecosystems. Recent advances in exploration of microbial diversity, molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics and genetic engineering have brought into focus several unforeseen applications of the microorganisms. With the availability of new molecular marker techniques, amazing microbial diversity of extreme habitats, unexplored habitats is unfolding. Consequently, there is a renewed interest shown in the applications of new microbes and their products.
