The Department of Plant Science will be organizing a DBT sponsored short term training course for mid carrier scientist involved in undergraduate teaching in Life Science and Biotechnology from 12th March to 25th March, 2012. The course would consist of Lectures followed by practical’s / hand’s on session.

About the Workshop :
There has always been a strong relationship between man and medicinal plants. Right from the start of civilization palnts have been used as medicine by men and animals, probably by animals before men. Ayurveda, born out of the Vedas, has always has a close bond with herbal plants. Plants have become the never ending source for new bio-dynamic compunds of potential therapeutc value. It is in this context that our Department is proposing to organize this scientific gathering with full involvement of experts from various organizations from all over India. With the objective of sharing experiences and knowledge in the field of herbal research, this workshop will provide a platform and opportunities to the participants to interact with the national scientists and persons working in the field of herbal research. Moreover the workshop is expected to bring out new ideas and research knowledge associated with emerging challenges and research opportunities in herbal science to the budding scientists. We hope this workshop will provide a clear image of how medicinal plants can provide a safer future for human beings, as they did in past and doing in present too.
About the Department :
Department of Botany, established in July 1977, is offering post graduate degree in M.Sc, M.Phil and PhD programmes in Botany with specialization in Mycology, Microbiology, Plant Physiology, Nutraceuticals and Phytomedicine, Tissue culture and reproductive biology, Genetics and Plant Breeding and Plant Systematics. The Department instituted a new Masters programme in Bioinformatics for the first time in the country during 2011 which has been elevated as an independent Department in the year 2006. The Department of Botany has received the support of DST-FIST grant in the year 2011. So far the Department has produced 90 PhD and 200 M.Phil scholars. Apart from 9 books/monographs, the faculty members and the students have published, a total of 830 research papers in both national and international journals. The faculty members have so far completed 32 research projects funded by various national and international agencies and have filed sevral patents.

DEPARTMENT OF Biotechnology :
The Department of Biotechnology was established in 1997. It offers two formal programmes of study; two year post-graduate course leading to M.Sc. in Biotechnology and doctoral research leading to Ph.D degree. Besides, it offers opportunity for post-doctoral research. The faculty members of the Department have been able to attract a large number of extramurally funded research projects. At present the department has ongoing research projects sponsored by DBT, DST, CSIR, ICAR, DRDO, UGC, DOEn, ISM&H, CCRUM, AYUSH, and World Bank. The Department has inter-institutional collaboration with ICGEB (New Delhi), AIIMS (New Delhi), NII (New Delhi), Dabur Research Foundation (Ghaziabad), NICD (New Delhi), NCBS (Bangalore), CDRI (Lucknow), TERI (New Delhi), IARI (New Delhi), JNU (New Delhi), University of Delhi South Campus (New Delhi), IGIB (New Delhi), CDFD (Hyderabad). IIIM (Jammu), IITRC (Lucknow), DRDO (New Delhi), University of Calcutta (Kolkata), Kalyani University (Kolkata), THSTI (New Delhi) and NIPGR (New Delhi).
CENTRE FOR TRANSGENIC PLANT DEVELOPMENT :
The Centre is a unit of Department of Biotechnology. It is equipped with the state of art facilities to train the Ph.D and post doctoral students to carry out research in various disciplines of plant and microbial Biotechnology. The major R & D activities include cloning and characterization of novel genes linked with tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses and quality traits of medicinal and crop plants; authentication and standardization of crude components of herbal formulations; nano vehicle assisted gene delivery and expression in medicinal and crop plants.
The thrust areas of centre also include improving the quality of medicinal crops through genetic engineering of metabolic pathways; in vivo and in vitro conservation of medicinal plants; proteomics of host-pathogen interactions; development of easy, rapid, sensitive, cost effective method for aflatoxigenic mould detection in the groundnut kernels and soil; and identification and quantification of aflatoxins in the food and feed.
AREA OF FOCUS :
Plants synthesize a wide array of secondary metabolites, often with highly complex structures, which are used as drugs, flavouring agents, fragrances, natural colours, sweeteners etc. Plantderived drugs in western countries also represent a huge market value. Currently one-fourth of all prescribed pharmaceuticals in industrialized countries contain compounds that are directly or indirectly via semi-synthesis, derived from plants. The most pharmaceutically important secondary metabolites are isolated from wild or cultivated plants as their chemical synthesis is not economically feasible. The concentration of these metabolites in plants is however, very low, making their commercial production non-economic. Therefore, efforts are being made globally to enhance the concentration of these metabolites in plants through metabolic engineering. The overall objectives of the seminar is to exchange ideas and knowledge on recent advances in the field of secondary plant metabolite research. This will help researchers in designing strategies to improve the biosynthesis and production of secondary metabolites.
