2012 Canada - World Congress of Herpetology

The University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria, and the city of Vancouver will host the 7th World Congress of Herpetology (WCH) in beautiful British Columbia from 8-14 August 2012. Vancouver has a magnificent setting on the Pacific Ocean, is a world-class conference city and offers a wealth of scientific resources and entertainment.

Despite its small population and northern climate, Canada has a spirited and collegial herpetological community that extends from coast to coast. Canadian researchers from across the country have established a significant international presence in diverse areas of herpetology. The 2012 WCH in Vancouver will highlight Canada’s west coast and adjacent parts of the USA. However, we also will be aided by our herpetological colleagues in other parts of Canada, giving this congress a truly Canadian flavour. We promise a wonderful social and intellectual experience in one of the world’s most beautiful settings. The WCH in Vancouver will be a wonderful opportunity for herpetologists from all over North America to meet with their colleagues from around the world.

Each day’s academic program will begin with an address by a WCH Plenary Speaker. Contributed paper and symposium sessions will fill out the remainder of the daily academic program. Poster sessions, with refreshments available, also will provide an excellent chance to meet colleagues and talk about research.

The social program will include a mix of receptions, picnics and a conference-ending banquet. There is much to see and do in and around Vancouver as well. The mid-meeting break will allow conference attendees to visit Vancouver or the surrounding area on their own, using either public transportation or rental cars, but we also will organize group day trips to Victoria, the Gulf Islands, or other local sights.

In addition to the academic and social programs, we expect to have exhibitors, including commercial publishers and book-sellers, equipment suppliers, etc. present throughout the meeting.

Pre- and post-conference excursions will not be planned for some time yet, but the possibilities from Vancouver are nearly endless. They include:

* The Okanagan Valley in south-central British Columbia – enjoy sun, wine-tasting, and rattlesnakes.
* Cruises up the west coast to Alaska.
* Banff and the Rocky Mountains – beautiful scenery and magnificent wildlife.
* Olympic National Park in Washington.
* Driving trip down the west coast to California.
* Seattle – a large cosmopolitan city in adjacent Washington.
* Whistler – one of the world’s most popular ski resorts, just a short drive from Vancouver.

Conference on Advancing Excellence in Gender, Sex and Healthcare Research - Montreal Canada

We are pleased to announce that the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Institute of Gender and Health will host the conference Advancing Excellence in Gender, Sex and Health Research in Montréal, Canada on October 29-31, 2012.

The conference will explore advances in our understandings of how sex and gender influence the health of women, men, and people of diverse gender identities over the lifespan. It will showcase excellence across the full scope of health research, from cell to society, offering a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary learning and exchange. The conference will feature dynamic presentations on new discoveries and innovative interventions, interactive poster sessions, lively discussions and valuable networking opportunities with leaders in the field.

The conference is open to all researchers, policy-makers, health care providers, non-governmental organizations, students and others with a shared interest in gender, sex and health. While there are no single agreed-upon definitions of “gender” or “sex,” it is fairly common to associate gender with socially constructed roles, relationships, behaviours, relative power, and other traits that societies ascribe to women, men and people of diverse gender identities. Gender has multiple dimensions, including but not limited to gender roles, gender identities, gender relations and institutionalized gender. We tend to think of gender in binary terms (e.g., masculine/feminine) but it is more appropriate to think of gender as existing on a spectrum because of the broad range of gender identities and expressions.

Sex is typically understood to refer to the biological and physiological characteristics that distinguish females from males. Like gender, it is a multi-dimensional construct that encompasses characteristics such as hormones, genes, anatomy and physiology. We also tend to think of sex in binary terms (e.g., male/female) yet considerable diversity exists in sex (e.g., variation in hormone levels, chromosomal differences, etc.).

While gender and sex are interrelated sex does not determine gender, nor does gender determine sex. For example, someone born female might have a masculine gender identity. Together gender and sex play an important role in determining health experiences, access to care, and treatment outcomes.
Conference streams will include:

Theoretical and methodological innovations
Promising interventions
Emerging areas
Integrating both gender and sex in health research
Health and social inequities
The biology of sex and health

Who should attend:

The conference will be ideal for: all researchers, policy-makers, health care providers, non-governmental organizations, students, and other stakeholders and individuals who share an interest in how gender and sex influence health.
Conference venue:

Hilton Montréal Bonaventure
900 de la Gauchetière Street West
Montréal, Québec, Canada
