Organized by
Department of Biotechnology, Govt. City College, Hyderabad
GLIMPSE OF THE THEME :
Biotechnology is one of the most exciting and revolutionary sciences of this century. It can be defined as the technological application that uses biological systems, living organisms or derivatives, thereof, to make or modify products or processes for specific use. The advent of biotechnology has opened up a wide horizon of new discoveries in the field of biological research. Biotechnology also proves that its immense applications at every step of human life such as, health care, crop improvement, development of valuable products and abatement of environmental problems could be probed and solved.
In this scenario, Institutions and universities are playing a major role in the development and promotion of this science and technology; we come face to face with an obligation to help society understand and manage the changes that arise from biotechnology and genomics.
Consequently, the effects of any new technology introduced on the scale anticipated for biotechnology extends beyond the factories and research centers in influencing our everyday life: the detection of genetic predispositions becomes more predictable - a great deal of prospects of an individual may be known through the applications of molecular diagnostics at the time of the birth itself. The moral question then arises as to who has access to this information and how this will affect the individual’s quality of life and overall on the world economy and society. However,we are in the early stages of a major revolution in life sciences and biotechnology that will surely impact every aspect of our society. The major benefits on the horizon will only be realized if society accepts biotechnology and its products as ethical and safe.
