National Level Training Workshop on Monitoring and Evaluation of Recalcitrant Chemicals in the Environment (MERE '11) Organized by Bharathidasan University

National Level Training Workshop on Monitoring and Evaluation of Recalcitrant Chemicals in the Environment (MERE '11) Organized by School of Environmental Sciences Bharathidasan University
About Our University : Bharathidasan University was established as an affiliating university in 1982 in the name of a great revolutionary Tamil poet, BHARATHIDASAN at Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, India. The University has number of academic departments and supporting facilities. The University is leading and made rapid stride in research achievements in number of arts and science disciplines. The Department of Environmental Biotechnology was established in 2002 to provide the essential requirements for a
postgraduate education and research in biotechnological approaches in environmental health
About The Workshop : Environmental contaminants that can affect the endocrine system in animals are known as endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs). Many EDCs are associated with developmental, reproductive and other health problems in wildlife. In recent years tremendous attention is being paid on the monitoring of environmental chemicals mainly the “Pesticides, Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs)” due to its severe environmental impacts. Numbers of reports have been made on Pesticides, PCBs, PAHs and PPCPs residues in the environment at alarming level. Hence the main focus of the workshop is to impart hands on training on the analysis of environmental samples using Gas Chromatograph coupled with Mass Spectrophotometer for detection and quantification of Pesticides, PCBs, PAHs, PPCPs, etc.
Pesticides: DDTs (o,p’- and p,p’- compounds of DDT, DDE, and DDD), HCHs (all-isomers), Chlordanes (cis/trans-chlordane and Heptachlor), Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), etc.PCBs
PAHs: Anthracene, Acenapthalene, Pyrene,Phenanthrene, Fluorene, etc.
PPCPs: Triclosan, Parabens, Carbamazepine,Aspirin,  NSAIDs (Ibuprofen, Ketoprofen, Naproxen, Diclofenac), etc.The lab is equipped with GC-MS (QP 2010- SHIMADZU).  This workshop would be very useful to students, research scholars and scientists of pollution control boards, quality control labs and R&D personal from industries involved in environmental and food quality assessment/monitoring.

Workshop Training Schedule :
Day 1 : Introduction about the workshop.
Lecture 1- Emerging Pollutants in the environment: POPs and PPCPs.
Lecture 2- An appraisal on multiresidual analysis.
Lecture 3 - GC-MS an important tool in environmental monitoring.
Day 2 : Water sample: Chemical Extraction, Clean-up, Concentration, etc.
Day 3 : Sediment/Soil sample: Chemical Extraction, Clean-up, Concentration, etc.
